On Friday, April 12, 2024, at approximately 2:26 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian at the 1700 block of East Riverside Drive. The pedestrian, later identified as Aaron Alcala Hernandez, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Dontay Waffer, was arrested and charged with Accident Involving Death and DWI.  This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 24th fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 24 fatalities for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 30 fatal crashes resulted in 30 fatalities.

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at approximately 7:39 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a single vehicle crash in the 2200 block of Forbes Dr. The crash occurred when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a light pole. The passenger of the vehicle, Carolina Lopez, was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased, on Thursday, April 11, 2024. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

On Wednesday, April 10, at approximately 8:42 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the 2300 block of South Lamar Boulevard. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene, was not impaired, and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Sunday, April 7, 2024, at approximately 7:35 a.m. Austin Police Department (APD) officers, responded to a single vehicle crash in the 9600 block of East US 290 Highway WB. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash happened on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at approximately 10:52 p.m. but went unnoticed until daylight.

On Friday, March 15, 2024, at approximately 7:31 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between two vehicles at the intersection of East Parmer Lane and Harris Branch Parkway. George Luckett, a passenger of one of the vehicles, was transported to a hospital. Luckett died on March 30 as a result of his injuries. All parties remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and instead left the scene.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, at approximately 9:33 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between two SUVs in the 6200 block of N Capital of Texas highway SB. The driver of one of the vehicles, Tawnya Sanders, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department identified a man who died following a three-vehicle crash March 17. According to APD, officers responded to the crash at approximately 2 p.m. in the 900 block of South Interstate Highway 35 Service Road SB.  APD said one of the drivers, later identified as 88-year-old Joe Ildefonso Garcia, was taken to the hospital where he later died.  Police said all of the other people involved in the incident remained at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation.

UPDATE: As the investigation progressed, detectives identified the suspected driver as Tyrone Thompson. Thompson was involved in another crash on Tuesday morning in Travis County and was arrested on unrelated charges. APD VHU filed Crash Involving Death charges on Thompson for the incident that occurred in Downtown Austin. The deceased victim was identified as Cody Jordon Shelton.  The Austin Police Department said a second person has died following a vehicle-pedestrian crash in downtown Austin during the week of South by Southwest. The department identified that second victim Wednesday morning as William Dunham, 34..   On Tuesday, March 12, at approximately 1:09 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians at the intersection of East 7th Street and Red River Street. One of the pedestrians was pronounced deceased on scene, and the second pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with potential life-threatening injuries.  The suspect vehicle did not remain on scene and continued traveling east on East 7th street.

The pedestrian, Jose Hernandez Patlan, was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the pickup truck remained on scene, was not impaired, and cooperated with the investigation.

On Sunday, February 25, 2024 at approximately 4:15 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a pickup truck and an SUV in the 12300 block of Technology Boulevard. A passenger that was traveling in the pickup truck, Braden Norman, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Other involved occupants were either transported with minor injury or were not injured and refused transport.

On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at approximately 2:27 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash involving two vehicles and a pedestrian in the 6400 block of W Highway 290 WB. Preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck crashed into the rear of a SUV and the pickup truck then hit a pedestrian. The unidentified pedestrian died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, Jacob Sussman, was arrested for Intoxication Manslaughter. The driver of the SUV was not injured, remained on scene, and is cooperating with the investigation.

Deceased:  Michell Holloway, Black female, 5/02/1966

On Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at approximately 5:35 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash at North Austin Medical Center, located at 12221 North Mopac. The driver of a sedan, Michell Holloway, crashed her vehicle into the emergency room waiting area. Three adults and two juveniles that were in the waiting room area were injured and taken to different hospitals for treatment. Some of their injuries were serious, but not life-threatening. Holloway was later pronounced deceased at North Austin Medical Center. This investigation is in its early and preliminary stages. However, there is no indication at this time that this was an intentional act, nor does it indicate that the driver suffered from a medical episode. The circumstances are still under investigation and the information may change as the investigation progresses.

On Monday, February 12, 2024 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD officers responded to a crash involving a sedan and a hatchback in the 200 block of US 183 Toll SB lanes. The sedan was stopped in the middle lane with the vehicle hazards on. The hatchback then crashed into the sedan’s rear. Two juvenile passengers were traveling in the sedan. One of the juvenile passengers, DeErick Williams II, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died. The driver of the sedan was not injured, nor impaired. The driver of the hatchback suffered minor injury, remained on scene, and is cooperating with the investigation.

Howard Lane. Duer was taken to a local hospital, where he later died on February 5th. The driver of pickup truck remained on scene, was not impaired, and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Monday, February 5, 2024, at approximately 6:46 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a pickup truck and an 18-wheeler in the 13400 block of N SH 45 WB. The pickup truck crashed into the back of the tractor trailer. The unidentified driver of the pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, remained on scene, and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Sunday, February 4, 2024, at approximately 4:18 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash in the 600 block of West Anderson Lane. Preliminary investigation revealed that for unknown reasons, the passenger of a vehicle exited the car while it was still in motion. The passenger was then hit by another vehicle, which left the scene without stopping. The passenger was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the passenger’s vehicle remained on scene, was not impaired, and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 1:54 p.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a crash between a pickup truck and an SUV in the intersection of El Salido Parkway and N FM 620 Road. The driver of the SUV died on scene. The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of pickup truck was not intoxicated, and is cooperating with the investigation.

On Monday, January 1, 2024, at approximately 5:58 a.m., Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a vehicle crash between a Sports-Utility-Vehicle and a pedestrian in the 6600 Block of North Interstate Highway 35 SB. The pedestrian died at the scene. The driver remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation and did not show any signs of intoxication..   This incident is being investigated as Austin’s 1st fatal crash of 2024, resulting in 1 fatality for the year. On the date of this crash in 2023, 1 fatal crash resulted in 1 death. (27)

Greater Austin Area Fatal Crashes ————

May 1, 2024 – Williamson County () –One person is dead following a major crash on Ronald Reagan Boulevard in Williamson County.  The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened between a passenger car and a commercial vehicle on Ronald Reagan Boulevard north of FM 3405. The sheriff’s office said one person died in the crash.

April 24, 2024 – Travis County (21) – One person is dead after a motorcycle crash in Leander on Wednesday, Austin-Travis County EMS said.  Around 7:04 p.m., medics responded to the crash in Leander in the 10200 block of Lime Creek Road. That’s near Travista Drive. Travis County Starflight also responded to the crash for an unidentified adult person, medics said. However, medics said the person died on the scene. (26)

April 24, 2024 – Travis County (20) – A person died in west Austin Wednesday after being involved in a “vehicle-pedestrian” collision shortly after noon, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.  ATCEMS said on social media at 12:12 p.m. that CPR was in progress for a person after an incident involving “heavy machinery” in the 3000 block of Westlake Drive, near Trailview Mesa Drive. In an update at 12:25 p.m., EMS said the person was pronounced dead on the scene after “extensive resuscitative efforts.” (25)

April 16, 2024 – Travis County (19) – Texas authorities are investigating after a car with a dead body inside was pulled out of a creek in Manor Monday morning. The Department of Public Safety said it responded to a fatal crash around 8:41 a.m. Monday after a driver reported seeing a vehicle upside down and almost completely submerged in Cottonwood Creek in the 18800 block of Cameron Road in Manor. The vehicle, a 2008 Infiniti, was recovered from the creek and emergency responders found a man in the passenger seat. He was confirmed to be dead on the scene, according to Travis County ESD No. 2.  The accident is being investigated by DPS. (24)

April 15, 2024 – Leander – A man riding on a motorcycle died after striking a van that pulled out in front of him on U.S. Highway 183. The deadly wreck that happened Monday at about 6:12 p.m. on the highway near Sheila Drive, which is close to Crystal Falls Parkway.  Brendan Kayle Johnson, a 29-year-old resident of Leander, died after his Honda motorcycle struck the left rear side of a Chevrolet van that turned left from Sheila Drive onto U.S. 183. The van’s driver remained at the crash site, according to the city, and received a citation for failure to yield right of way turning left.  (23)

April 13, 2024 – Buda, Texas – 41-year-old Thomas Shears was struck by a car when he was leaving a concert at Buck’s Backyard on Farm to Market Road 1626 on Saturday, April 13. His family wonders if there were better signage along the road, Shears might still be alive.  Shears went to see a concert with two others that night. When they arrived at Buck’s Backyard, the parking lot in front of the venue appeared full, so they parked along FM 1626, where he was eventually hit and died as a result of his injuries.  (22)

April 12, 2024 – Brenham, Texas – A second person died after a crash earlier this month when a stolen 18-wheeler wrecked into a Texas Department of Public Safety building.  The DPS Southeast Texas Region posted on its social media on Monday that Cheryl Turner, 63, of Brenham died as a result of the incident.1 dead after stolen 18-wheeler crashes into Texas DPS building, several others injured   The incident happened Friday, April 12 when 42-year-old Clenard Parker crashed a stolen 18-wheeler into a DPS office in Brenham.  One person, later identified as Bobby Huff, 78, died at the scene that day. DPS said a total of 14 people were involved in the incident. Six people were taken to the hospital and eight others were treated and released at the scene. Parker was arrested at the scene and taken to the Washington County Jail where he faces several charges.   (21)

April 7, 2024 – Travis County (18) – One person died after a crash on US 290 in eastern Travis County, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.  The crash happened just before 8 a.m. Sunday on East U.S. 290 eastbound near Springdale Road.  ATCEMS said the crash was a probable single-vehicle collision. March 30, 2024 – Travis County (17) – Three (3) people died early morning Saturday following a two-vehicle crash in eastern Travis County, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.  ATCEMS said it responded to the crash at approximately 2:25 a.m. near Farm-to-Market 973 and Platt Lane, and four ambulances and STAR Flight were at the scene. At the crash site, medics found one person entrapped with critical injuries and three patients with non-life-threatening injuries. The critical patient was taken to the hospital by STAR Flight, and ATCEMS confirmed three patients died at the scene. The three other patients were also taken to the hospital.  (Since 2019, there have been more than 230 crashes, 60 of which were in 2023, along the nearly five-mile stretch of FM 973 from Steger Lane to U.S. Highway 290, according to the Texas Department of Transportation’s Crash Records Information System.  TxDOT confirmed it began conducting a speed study on the road, but it is expected to tak several months to complete.  “An environmental study is also underway for FM 973 from U.S. [Highway] 79 to U.S. 290, which will focus on safety enhancements and mobility improvements along the corridor,” a TxDOT spokesperson said. “It’s important to note, TxDOT also reminds drivers to make smart decisions behind the wheel, including driving to conditions, obeying the speed limit, avoiding distractions, never drinking and driving and always buckling up.”)  (18)

March 28, 2024 – Travis County (14) – One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash involving a rollover on the State Highway 130 Toll on Thursday.  The crash was reported around 2:30 p.m. on State Highway 130 Toll at Cameron Road, near the Austin Executive Airport.  Medics said one adult person was pronounced dead on the scene. March 22, 2024 – Bastrop County –  A Hays Consolidated Independent School District bus carrying Tom Green Elementary pre-K students was Hays CISD speeds up bus replacement, identifies student who died in Friday crash | KXAN Austininvolved in a serious crash Friday, resulting in at least two deaths.  Ryan Wallace (@utwallace) / XOne of the deaths was a child on the bus, and the other was a man from a vehicle traveling behind the bus. The district identified the child as Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, 5 years old.  Also Ryan Wallace, 33, was a doctoral candidate at the School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin.  Both Montoya and Wallace died at the scene. The crash happened between the bus and a concrete truck near Mustang Ridge. Officials said it appeared the concrete truck veered into the lane of the school bus on SH 21 near Caldwell Road.   The concrete truck driver involved in the fatal Hays CISD school bus crash was arrested in Bastrop County. Court documents said he admitted to smoking marijuana and consuming cocaine within 24 hours of the crash.  Hays CISD releases dashcam video of fatal school bus crashThe Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed to KXAN Friday that Jerry Hernandez, 42, was arrested on a warrant for criminally negligent homicide. Additionally, he was also arrested on an unrelated warrant for a bond violation out of Hays County.   ATCEMS said it evaluated a total of 53 people involved in the incident. Four of the people were in critical condition and transported by helicopter, six people were taken to the hospital in ambulances with potentially serious injuries. Others were transported by other agencies as well, medics said.  In a news release from Hays CISD, the district said the students were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo. A total of 44 students and 11 adults were on the bus. (14)

March 15, 2024 – Travis County (13) – One person died and another was critically injured in a crash on State Highway 71 near the Travis and Bastrop County line overnight, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.  ATCEMS posted on X at 12:36 a.m. that medics were responding to a vehicle rollover on the eastbound side of the highway, between the 5546-5552 blocks. The post said CPR was in progress for one person and another person was trapped in the vehicle.  In an update, ATCEMS said the trapped person was taken out of the vehicle and declared a trauma alert then taken to St. David’s South with critical, life-threatening injuries.  The other person was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash, according to a final update from ATCEMS. March 11, 2024 – Mustang Ridge (12) – One person was killed and three were injured in a crash in Mustang Ridge late Sunday night.  The crash involving a car and a motorcycle in the 18500 block of Camino Real (State Highway 21) occurred around 9:20 p.m.  One patient was pronounced dead on the scene and three other patients were transported to the hospital with critical injuries, according to police. It is an active investigation.  Several other agencies responded to the crash as well, including the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Travis County Fire Rescue, Austin-Travis County EMS, Lockhart EMS, Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas Department of Public Safety. March 3, 2024 – Travis County (11) – Three people died in an overnight crash on State Highway 130 near Tesla Road in eastern Travis County.  Austin-Travis County EMS said the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A vehicle went off SH 130 on Tesla Road and ended up on its roof.  The Department of Public Safety said three women died because of the crash.

February 12, 2024 – Travis County (8) – One person died and another was injured in a crash on South Highway 183 near the Pilot Knob neighborhood overnight Sunday into Monday morning. The crash happened around 2:40 a.m. on Hwy 183 near its intersection with Planeview Drive. It was a two-vehicle crash. The highway was closed in both directions at FM 812 for several hours Monday morning but reopened around 8 a.m.  One person was pronounced dead on the scene, and ATCEMS said another person was pinned and extricated by the fire department and declared a trauma alert by medics. They were transported to a local hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. (10)

February 11, 2024 – Pflugerville (7) – One person died following a two-vehicle crash in Pflugerville, according to Travis County ESD No. 2.  Firefighters were on the scene near John Henry Faulk Drive for the crash with a reported vehicle rescue.  Officials said two patients were taken to the hospital and one person died. February 11, 2024 – Travis County (6) –  Four people are dead after a Sunday night crash involving up to four vehicles, according to Austin-Travis County EMS. ATCEMS said the crash was reported at the intersection of FM 812 and FM 973 just before 10 p.m. The four died at the scene of the crash, ATCEMS said.  According to ATCEMS, one other person, an adult, was taken to the hospital with potentially serious injuries. The Texas Department of Public Safety told KXAN it is investigating the crash. The Texas Department of Transportation posted on social media at 10:48 p.m. that all lanes were closed at the intersection due to the crash. (8)

February 7, 2024 – Travis County (2)  – The Texas Department of Public Safety said troopers are investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that closed lanes of FM 969 in eastern Travis County Wednesday morning. Around 3:30 a.m., a Texas DPS trooper responded to the crash near the 900 block of FM 969. That’s two miles east of U.S. Highway 183. According to DPS, an unidentified male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that drove away from the scene. (4)

February 6, 2024 – Kyle – A Kyle woman was arrested and is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter after a Friday night crash left one person dead, according to the City of Kyle.  Sonja Marinkovic, 45, was arrested by the Kyle Police Department following the crash shortly before midnight on the I-35 Southbound Frontage Road at Kohlers Crossing.   Police investigated the crash and found that a Mazda SUV, driven by Marinkovic, was driving at a high speed on wet roadways and hit the back of a Chevrolet passenger car, causing it to slide down a grassy median and end up on the shoulder of the frontage road.  The driver of the Chevrolet, identified by Kyle Police as Abdel Pastor, 45, was transported to Ascension Seton Hays where he was later pronounced dead.  According to Kyle Police, the driver of the gray Marinkovic displayed “multiple indicators of intoxication” and was arrested. January 31, 2024 – Kyle – A juvenile died Tuesday and another was apprehended by police after a chase that started in San Marcos and ended in the suspect vehicle crashing into a boulder in a rock quarry.  The San Marcos Police Department said officers started the chase early Tuesday morning after spotting a stolen Hyundai in San Marcos that was occupied by two juveniles from San Antonio. Officers tried to make a traffic stop but the driver fled south on Interstate 35, according to police. SMPD officers were helped by New Braunfels Police after crossing into New Braunfels city limits. The Hyundai eventually left the interstate and traveled down a gravel road and into a rock quarry in Comal County, then crashed into a boulder. The two occupants then got out of the car and ran, police said. The passenger ran toward an open quarry pit and died after falling about 70 feet. The driver of the car was apprehended by New Braunfels Police. (2)

January 23, 2024 – Manor – (1) Officials are investigating a fatal rollover crash that happened in Manor on Tuesday, where one person was possibly ejected, Austin-Travis County EMS said. Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Manor PD said it was helping the Travis County Sheriff’s Office in the 15600 block of North FM 973 with the crash.  Additionally, medics and the Travis County Emergency Services District 12 responded to the crash. One person was pronounced dead, medics said.  (1)
